MetBioMat Partners

Reducing costs and improving quality of life are key driving factors in health care. Here, degradable implant materials can significantly contribute: What is possible for polymers should also apply to metals. The Virtual Institute will contribute to the development of aluminum-free, biodegradable magnesium alloys, which are used especially in orthopeadic applications. Degradable implants that are suitable for children are of particular importance. The unique combination of partners - three leading hospitals (University Hospital Hamburg Eppendorf (UKE), Hannover Medical School (MHH) and University Hospital of Graz (MUG)), several institutes of the universities in Hamburg, Kiel and Hannover, and four German companies - enables HZG to expand its leadership in the area of biodegradable magnesium alloys. Therefore, MetBioMat will be the nucleus for a future translational center "Metallic Biomaterials". The interdisciplinary collaboration in MetBioMat together with the early involvement of users and manufacturers covers the relevant issues, techniques and approaches that are necessary for the implementation of this ambitious project.
